More than 300 asylum seekers on Nauru staged another protest Sunday
\n(21 October) afternoon calling for refugee processing to begin
\nimmediately and for closure of the Nauru detention centre (see
\nstatement below).<\/p>\n
The protest on Nauru was timed to coincide with a protest in Melbourne
\ncalling for an end to offshore processing. During the protest, the
\nasylum seekers called the UN to draw attention to their situation.<\/p>\n
The asylum seekers are very worried about moves to intimidate
\ndifferent groups inside the detention centre. Australian immigration
\nofficials are holding separate meetings with asylum seekers of
\ndifferent nationalities.<\/p>\n
One of the Iranian asylum seekers has been subjected to intense
\nsurveillance and seems to have a guard or Nauru police permanently
\nwatching him. \u201cThey even follow me to the toilet,\u201d he told the Refugee
\nAction Coalition.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is an urgent need for independent human rights observers to be
\nstationed on Nauru. The Australian government is using its \u2018no
\nadvantage\u2019 offshore processing policy to create intolerable condition
\non Nauru,\u201d said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action
\nCoalition.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government is also deliberately stalling refugee processing both
\nin Nauru and Australian detention centre. There are thousands of
\npeople now in Australian detention centres, that the government knows
\nit cannot send to Nauru or Manus Island, yet they have been left in
\nlimbo.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe uncertainty is a form of mental torture. It is precisely this
\nuncertainty that makes detention centres \u2018factories of mental
\nillness\u2019. The government should begin processing refuge claims, here
\nand on Nauru, immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n
