GOVERNMENT DISCRIMINATION OVER NAURU TRANSFERS<\/p>\n
With the arrival of three more asylum boats in the last 24 hours, the
\ntotal number of asylum seekers reaching Australia since 13 August is
\nnow over 2100 \u2013 enough to fill both Nauru and Manus Island.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Minister\u2019s announcement that asylum seekers will be moved to
\nNauru is just shabby political posturing,\u201d said Ian Rintoul speaking
\non behalf of the Refugee Action Coalition.<\/p>\n
\u201cChris Bowen has already said that neither Nauru nor Manus Island will
\nbe operational for months \u2013 meanwhile Australian detention centres
\nwill fill with long-term detainees.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter capitulating to the Opposition over Nauru, the government\u2019s
\nPacific Solution 2.0 is already in tatters. Asylum seekers sent to
\nNauru will be paying a high price for the government\u2019s policy
\ndisaster. \u00a0Condemned to tents for months, they will face shocking
\nconditions as the wet season runs from November to April. Nauru and
\nManus Island will become long-term refugee prisons.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government\u2019s own policies are pushing more people into asylum
\nboats. Despite the announcement that 400 UNHCR refugees would be
\nbrought from Indonesia immediately, nothing is actually happening to
\nbring the UNHCR refugees from Indonesia. Tamil refugees who were told
\nin January that they had been accepted by Australia are still waiting
\nin Indonesia. Many of them now believe that the only way they will get
\nto Australia is get a boat and come via Nauru.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Refugee Action Coalition is also concerned at what criteria the
\nMinister and the Immigration Department is using to select the
\nindividuals for transfer to Nauru.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are looking at a highly selective, punitive and potentially
\ndiscriminatory process. Without the criteria being made public, we
\ncannot be confident that individual asylum seekers or groups of asylum
\nseekers are not being discriminated against.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre Iranians, Tamils or stateless people likely to be selected
\nbecause the Minister thinks that primary acceptance rate or the
\nlikelihood of coercing people is an acceptable basis to select those
\nto be taken to Nauru?\u201d asked Rintoul.<\/p>\n
