An adaptation of\u00a0Franz Kafka<\/strong>‘s 1925 novel\u00a0The Trial<\/em><\/strong>, this production is inspired by the plight of more than 50 refugees who are indefinitely detained in Australian immigration centres because ASIO has assessed them to be national security risks. They have been given no information about the reasons for ASIO’s assessment and the decisions are not subject to any judicial or other independent scrutiny.<\/p>\n

A number of commentators have described the refugees’ situation as “Kafkaesque” because it evokes the author’s powerful writing about ordinary people caught in nightmarish and bizarre webs spun by immensely powerful and opaque forces.<\/p>\n

Directed by\u00a0Charles Slucki\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

K<\/strong>\u00a0is a group of Melbourne people who have come together specifically to write and produce this play. All are participating on a voluntary basis.<\/p>\n

Any proceeds from sale of tickets exceeding the costs of the production will be donated to two organisations working with immigration detainees \u2013 the\u00a0Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and theRefugee Immigration and Legal Centre<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
