{"id":19,"date":"2010-10-21T00:01:05","date_gmt":"2010-10-21T00:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/refugeeadvocacynetwork.org\/?p=19"},"modified":"2010-11-18T13:19:27","modified_gmt":"2010-11-18T13:19:27","slug":"what-we-stand-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/refugeeadvocacynetwork.org.au\/?p=19","title":{"rendered":"What we stand for"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An outline of RAN&#8217;s aims and objectives<!--more--><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Refugee Advocacy Network \u00a0(RAN) Statement of Purpose<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Adopted November 15 2010<\/em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This Refugee Advocacy Network was established in Victoria in April 2010 in response to the situation regarding Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>RAN brings together a wide range of people and organisations including refugees, in Victoria, concerned about the treatment of Asylum Seekers and Refugees and willing to advocate on behalf of their human rights.<\/p>\n<p>RAN believes the policies of the Government and the Opposition do not reflect the values which Australians hold dear, in particular but not least, a sense of fairness, equal treatment under the law and a welcoming nature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Central to the concerns of RAN<\/strong> are the UN conventions and instruments protecting the human rights of asylum seekers and refugees. Key among these are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The Universal      Declaration of Human Rights<\/em> (1948);<\/li>\n<li><em>The Refugee      Convention<\/em> (1951);<\/li>\n<li><em>Protocol on the      Status of Refugees<\/em> (1967);<\/li>\n<li><em>The Convention      on Torture<\/em> (1984);<\/li>\n<li><em>The Convention      on the Rights of the Child<\/em> (1989); &amp;<\/li>\n<li><em>UNHCR Revised      Guidelines on Criteria and Standards Regarding the Detention of Asylum      Seekers<\/em> (1992, 2002).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Australia is a signatory to the above UN conventions. RAN calls on our national parliament to enact these in domestic legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Any situation which denies the protection provided by these statements and conventions is a matter for advocacy by RAN.<\/p>\n<p>RAN operates by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recognizing differences among Network organizations with respect to their purpose and differing levels of resourcing,<\/li>\n<li>Meeting regularly with representatives of participating organizations,<\/li>\n<li>Communicating principally by email and the RAN website,<\/li>\n<li>Fostering inclusion, participation and democratic decision-making,<\/li>\n<li>Promoting education and understanding of issues,<\/li>\n<li>Political lobbying,<\/li>\n<li>Drawing on evidence based research,<\/li>\n<li>taking action: holding rallies; issuing media releases; setting up petitions; increasing web presence; running campaigns; &amp; engaging in acts of non violent civil disobedience;<\/li>\n<li>Acting peacefully.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>RAN does not aim to establish an office and it does not take on individual \u2018cases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An outline of RAN&#8217;s aims and objectives<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":53,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-19","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-about-the-refugee-advocacy-network","post-has-thumbnail"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
